I love interacting with students and young writers! My presentations can be tailored to early elementary, late elementary, or middle school audiences in either large or small groups. Typically I can meet with up to four groups per day. Skype visits are great too! If you are interested in bringing me to your school, please email me for availability.
SCHOOL VISITS
Wham! Ka-Pow! Eureka! Super Scientists in Action
School is full of science facts. What is the water cycle? Who lives in a rainforest? How is global warming changing the earth? We know a lot about how the world works. But for scientists the questions never stop. In this presentation, I introduce Super Scientist, Max Axiom, the star of my recent graphic novels, The Basics of Cell Life and Decoding Genes. Then I take students into the lab and out in the field with working scientists to see today’s cutting edge science in action.
Paddle My Own Canoe: An Adventure Poem Comes Alive
Through lyric language, stunning natural history illustrations, and a full pack of camping gear, I take students on a wildlife-filled, back-country adventure in the Canadian wilderness. My program brings camping to life and shares the story behind the writing of this book. I use my poetry as a springboard for students to start writing about their own passions.
WRITING WORKSHOPS
Telling Stories in Pictures and Words: How to Write Graphic Novels
Young writers are naturals when it comes to visual story-telling. This workshop gives them the tools they need to make an eight-page mini-comic.
Poems: Tiny Stories Waiting to Be Told
Inspired by Poem in Your Pocket Day, I use a variety of poetic forms and writing prompts to get students writing and sharing perfect, pocket-sized poetry.
WHAT AUDIENCES SAY
Maplewood teachers thought your presentation was one of the best they’d ever seen.
-Librarian at Maplewood Elementary School
Amber’s presentation was FABULOUS! The kids were, for the most part, completely glued to what she had to say.
